In light of the longstanding historical and strategic relations between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the People’s Republic of China, Port Said University has continued, from September 2024 to September 2026, to expand its partnerships with Chinese universities and institutions. This reflects the University’s commitment to academic internationalization, engagement with international experiences, knowledge and expertise exchange, research development, and providing opportunities for training, student and academic exchange, while strengthening cultural communication between the two countries.
During this period, the University expanded its cooperation with six Chinese universities and institutions, including Harbin Engineering University, Jiangsu Ocean University, Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, Shandong Youth University of Political Science, Yunnan Arts University, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) – HKUST(GZ). Areas of cooperation span engineering and marine engineering, artificial intelligence and computer science, energy, marine sciences, fisheries and environmental studies, chemistry, biotechnology and pharmacy, political science, management, economics and social sciences, as well as arts and design, in addition to data science, robotics, sustainability, financial technology, the digital economy, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Furthermore, 23 trainees from Port Said University participated in 13 training programs and international seminars in China, in cooperation with a number of Chinese institutions. The programs addressed a wide range of topics, including clean energy technologies, digital transformation, international cooperation in education, university leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship, data protection and information security, maritime management and the blue economy, and digital fisheries technologies. These programs contributed to enhancing participants’ capacities, transferring Chinese expertise and experiences to the University, and building new networks of academic and institutional cooperation.
The University also hosted a number of high-level visits and meetings, most notably the visit of the Educational Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Cairo in September 2025, a high-level governmental delegation from Shanghai in October 2025, and the visit of the Chinese Ambassador to Port Said University in April 2026. These engagements explored prospects for academic and student exchange, scientific research, academic programs, training, innovation, and technology, while introducing a number of future initiatives, including the establishment of a Confucius Institute at Port Said University, organizing student training programs and camps in China, expanding Chinese-language training programs, and welcoming Chinese students to study Arabic.
In June 2026, the University also received a delegation from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) to explore establishing academic and research partnerships in urban governance, financial technology, interdisciplinary research, and faculty and student exchange.
As part of its student and cultural exchange efforts, Port Said University is welcoming seven Chinese students to the Faculty of Arts to study Arabic during September 2026, alongside supporting the Department of Chinese Language and encouraging students to participate in international events and competitions. Prof. Dr. Shereef Youssef Saleh, President of Port Said University, participated in the closing ceremony of the 25th edition of the “Chinese Bridge” competition for Egyptian university students. The Department of Chinese Language at the Faculty of Arts achieved a distinguished accomplishment by securing first and fourth places in the 2026 global preliminary competition.
Port Said University has also been keen to strengthen its presence in Chinese diplomatic and cultural events, through the participation of the University President in the Chinese Embassy in Cairo’s celebration of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China in September 2025. This reflects the strength of the institutional relationship between the University and its Chinese counterparts, as well as its commitment to continuing to build sustainable academic and cultural bridges.
This journey demonstrates that cooperation between Port Said University and Chinese institutions is moving toward deeper and more sustainable partnerships—going beyond visits and knowledge exchange to encompass education, scientific research, training, innovation, and technology transfer. This supports the University’s commitment to academic internationalization and strengthens its role in building the knowledge economy and contributing to sustainable development goals.
